A LITTLE HISTORY ABOUT Pb PLUS®
 

In 1990 Frank Scrattish, established Pb Plus®, Inc., to provide engineering and consulting services for the lead-acid battery industry worldwide. His objective then and now, is to give genuine hands-on expertise with two things always in mind: practical and economical solutions that obtain fast and effective results that if possible always achieves cost savings, and never saying no to any size project.

Shortly after starting the business we developed a product we named Pb Plus® Mold Coat Additive. We accomplished this from 1991–1992. In our development effort, we realized no one was targeting vital and important grid surface texture. We saw the need to go beyond just making grids, that the greater need was to improve their surface-texture that would improve the bonding of the active materials.

We use the Additive in mold coatings for casting industrial and SLI grids. We can use it on any alloy, even the tough ones don’t stand a chance. We’ve not only targeted grid quality, productivity and economy but essential grid surface texture.

A LITTLE HISTORY ABOUT THE ADDITIVE
 

Cork has three essential functions absolutely necessary for casting grids:  INSULATOR, VENTING AGENT, and RELEASING AGENT.

Realizing how key these three are we sought to harness and enhance them if possible. We wanted a product that would not only be their partner but also prepare the grid surface for optimum active material bonding. This was our objective in 1991.

By the end of 1992 we had such a product that we were proud to call Pb Plus® Mold Coat Additive. We call it an Additive because we can add it directly to mold-coat during preparation or afterward whenever wanted.

The Additive’s formulation has surpassed our development expectations and then some. It is cork’s friendly companion and will not prevent cork from doing the job for which they originally intended for casting. We proved these claims by carrying out field tests using selected battery manufacturers and making many formula adjustments until we achieved compatibility between the Additive and cork.
 

During our testing we found that the Additive has a natural built in bonding system that activates when mixed with mold-coat. We discovered that this was possible because of the Additive’s unique fibers.
 

By formulation the Additive’s composition is primarily varying sizes of fibers that when mixed with mold-coat attach themselves to the cork particles. Picture this like the grid effect shown to the right. This interlocking feature provides for a strong network that combats ware. Because of this, we could greatly reduce the Additive required and still control grid weight and obtain the surface texture we wanted.

          We concluded our initial field testing with good results. In fact all of the battery manufacturers that conducted tests on the Additive have become customers. Nevertheless, we did not stop there. We are continuing our R and D efforts today and making reliable improvements.
 

THE ADDITIVE PUTS VITAL SURFACE
TEXTURE ON THE GRID
 

Mixing the Additive with mold-coat activates this important feature. The Additive’s unique fiber’s go to work attaching themselves to the cork particles creating a fluffing effect resulting in improved grid surface texture. Grids produced will show more noticeable texture on all surfaces. Proper grid texture significantly improves the mechanical and chemical bonding of the active materials to the grids during pasting and curing. The results produce improved plate life that gives extended electrical performance in field service.
 

THE ADDITIVE IMPROVES PRODUCTIVITY
 

Our clients tell us they almost achieve eight-hours of production with one or two weight adjustments. This is without removing the initial coating off the mold. Over the life of the mold-coat job, they have experienced a 25% increase or more in production.

We obtain these benefits because of the Additive’s incredible bonding and venting systems. The bonding system works to help maintain longer lasting grid appearance quality and weight control. The venting system works to help reduce shrinkage in the grid metal that is necessary to improve density. Improving metal density is crucial to help reduce corrosion during service.

The Additive’s high insulation quality makes it possible to reduce the ladle and mold temperatures from 10%-15%.
 

THE ADDITIVE IS USER FRIENDLY
 

The Additive is flexible to use, and non-hazardous. Its shelf-life is indefinite as packaged and up to two weeks in mold-coat form. The build up on the mold is insignificant and it will not plug the mold’s vital porosity.
